Water and impurities reside in engine tanks and cisterns.

The reason why diesel, unlike petrol, suffers from this problem is that this highly hygroscopic fuel does not have sufficient vapor pressure to expel the air from the tank.

Due to normal temperature variations (during the day with the engine running, at night with the engine off) it’s very common for condensation to form on the cooler walls of the tank. For this reason, it would be a good rule to always keep the diesel tank generally full.

Other cases of water formation in the tanks are due to tanks inadvertently left open or due to water residues in the tanks after normal cleaning operations.

The presence of water in diesel fuel causes very serious damage.

First, water can generate oxidation if in contact with the iron and steel surfaces of the tank, and if the rust particles come into contact with the fuel, they can reach the engine causing malfunctions.

Furthermore, by interacting with the acids present in the fuel, water can corrode the metal parts it comes into contact with. Water, which obviously isn’t as lubricating as oil, once it enters the combustion cycle, will accelerate the wear of engine parts.

By settling on the bottom of the tank, the water will form a perfect micro-environment for the proliferation of bacterial colonies and the consequent growth of flora which is very harmful to the tank itself and to the supply circuit and the injectors.

Main symptoms of water presence in diesel engines

The main symptoms of the presence of water in diesel engines can be:

Difficulty starting the engine, especially in the morning

The engine has a decidedly different noise than usual

Hiccups or jerks of the engine

For this reason, periodic maintenance involving the tank and the purity of the fuel is essential, both for engines that are used for many hours each day, but above all for engines that are used only in emergencies (generator sets).

To solve the problem, action must be taken on two fronts. First, it’s necessary to purify the diesel present in the tank from water and impurities of all kinds. Furthermore, it’s necessary to proceed with the removal of any type of impurity or bacterial flora present in the tank. These operations are only possible through specially made tools such as our filtration and tank cleaning machines.

These devices for filtering diesel fuel and cleaning tanks, while being very powerful, have the great advantage of being easily transportable.

Although they weigh between 30 and 90 kilograms, they are easily movable because they are housed in wheeled frames in painted steel with 2 or 4 wheels.

The dimensions of these trolleys are very small and allow them to be positioned wherever necessary, for fuel filtering and tank cleaning operations.

The fuel intake and delivery pipes are 2 to 3 meters long and allow to reach the tank cap anywhere. The iron pipes at the end of the suction and pressure pipes are up to 75 centimeters long.

The suction power of these machines is given by efficient vane pumps with a maximum pressure of 3 bar which allow filtering and cleaning operations to be performed in a few minutes, or even for very long periods without risking overheating of the electric motor.

It should be noted that the choice of the correct equipment depends on the quantity of filtered fuel and/or on the type of tanks you want to restore.

With our range of filtering systems, it’s possible to filter small volumes of fuel in the order of a few hundred liters up to more than 30,000 liters and to purify tanks with capacities from 300 up to 2,500 litres.

The functioning of these machines is very simple; during the aspiration a first phase of filtration is carried out by means of a filter with washable 100-micron mesh filter, to immediately eliminate the most important impurities.

The fuel is then subject to a second phase of filtration under pressure, where it will be micro-filtered and separated from the water thanks to a 10-micron microfiber filter.

On request it’s possible to install a 1- or 5-micron microfiber filter.

Once cleaned, the diesel can be sent to another tank or sent back to the original tank. In the latter case, the operation should last longer than required, to completely purify the diesel and clean the tank without the need for disassembly.

The DEUTZ Diesel Flux 79 DTZ and the DEUTZ Maxi Diesel Flux 140 DTZ are also equipped with a digital display to precisely monitor the amount of fuel filtered in each cleaning session.

Fitted with simple On/Off switches, these appliances can be easily connected to the normal 230 Volt electrical network via a single-phase industrial socket with absorption ranging between 500 and 1,150 watts.

As a final indication, it should be noted that all the machines in our range must be used exclusively with EN590 diesel, and cannot be used with petrol, kerosene or solvents.

To conclude, we briefly summarize the characteristics of these three filtration equipment:

<span class="ez-toc-section"
